+ Do I need to be in shape before I take my first class at WHY?

Absolutely not. Anyone, any age, any size, any fitness level can practice in class! This yoga system is the single most powerful way to get yourself into a balanced state of health and wellness – including mental and physical fitness. The most important thing is that you start as soon as possible, and that you don’t stop showing up – lack of motivation, stress and physical limitations do not have to be your story!

+ What if I am not flexible or in shape?

You start where you start and the rest of your life changes from there. Our classes are designed to be beginner’s level so all bodies can access the classes and postures. Modifications are provided upon registration and checking in with your instructor BEFORE class. We are here to guide you!

+ What should I wear?

Yoga short or pants. Basketball shorts, sports top, comfortable clothing. Wear what is comfortable as you will perspire.

+ How should I eat and hydrate?

Make sure you are hydrated before class. Pure water is best – Gatorade and other sugary sports drinks are not recommended during class, as they cause the body to digest and divert blood away from the skin and muscles. We do sell Nuun tabs for stabilizing electrolytes. Several bites of protein and a complex carb work wonders before class. Folks have discovered that eating a heavy meal too close to class time does not work well. The rule of thumb is nothing heavy to eat two hours prior to class.

+ How often should I practice?

The amount you practice will lead to different levels of benefit. A daily practice for 60 days kickstarts beginners who are committed to the most noticeable transformation in their health and well-being. In general, the Bikram method should be practiced at least 3-4 times per week for the full range of therapeutic benefits to take effect. Those who practice once or twice per week will still notice significant improvements in mobility, concentration, respiratory function, and emotional balance. Interventional research on the 90-minute class shows definite improvement in cardiovascular function, reduced cholesterol, and balanced blood sugar at a rate of 3 times per week, and reduction in mild-to-moderate depression and anxiety at a rate of 2 times per week.

+ Why is a Bikram class always the same 26 postures?

A consistent, comprehensive system for beginning students is extremely important in order to:

  • build mastery and discipline
  • develop subtlety and depth of understanding
  • maintain safety before advancing without overdoing it.
  • improve strength and mobility of every single joint in every class
  • train the mind to look for internal differences rather than external stimuli Rather than the sequence changing, YOU change! As you learn to pay better attention, look for the details, and steady your focus, you will learn something new. Every single class is different.

+ What if I have a medical condition?

One of the best things about this yoga is that you do not even need to be able to stand up to participate. Most chronic medical conditions are improved by each class. Many students use the studio chambers to feel soothed after medical treatments and various procedures.

+ Can I do yoga while pregnant?

Absolutely. However, there are very specific guidelines for pregnancy. First, although core temperature has been found to remain at a safe temperature in Bikram Yoga, the medical community wants to make sure that core temperature does not rise during the first trimester of pregnancy. You will position your mat nearest to the doors. Some feel most comfortable tracking their heart rate. Hundreds of women around the world have practiced Rajashree’s Pregnancy Yoga within the Bikram Yoga classroom during all phases of pregnancy with no adverse effects. Most pregnant practitioners find nausea and hormonal shifts can be experienced more comfortably. Some even find that the 2nd and 3rd trimesters are easier dealt with when a regular practice prior to pregnancy was established prior to pregnancy

+ Can children do Bikram Yoga?

Absolutely! It is exciting to see and maintain the natural range of motion of the human spine, prior to stress and injury. Youth ages 14+ may practice the entire class. We ask that youth 16 and under practice with a parent prior to attending on their own. Prior to puberty and sweat-gland development, most kids do best when they try the first set and sit down the second set.

+ Why do you charge a late/no show fee?

We reserve that space for you. When we don’t have a chance to fill your slot, another student misses out and it turns into a business rather than a yoga experience. You can also look at it as motivation to get in the chamber! Learn how to cancel your class. If you are experiencing extenuating circumstances, please text us at (802) 871-2525 or email us at willistonhotyoga@gmail.com to avoid incurring the fee. No refunds on Late Cancel/No Show fees.

Doors open 30 minutes before class for check-in and are locked one minute before class starts. Please arrive to class on time to preserve the atmosphere of the chamber for your community! + Why are there 26 postures with so many savasanas in between?

Bikram developed this scientific series of postures and breathing exercises through years of research with Bishnu Ghosh’s help. The series has been proven to help people with chronic diseases and injuries of all kinds. Each posture prepares your body for the next posture. Savasana gives us a chance to relax the entire body and prepares us to get deeper into the internal organs during the floor postures.

+ Why do I need a yoga mat and a yoga towel?

Practicing with just a mat alone is dangerous and NOT permitted. Our number one priority is to keep you safe. Some students try to use a beach towel or shower towel in place of a Yogi Toe towel...but the problem is that these items are not designed for exercise and sweating purposes. Yogi Toe towels feature slip-resistant padding on the bottom side so they stay in place and prevent you from slipping. We have Yogi Toe towels available to purchase or rent.

+ Can I do modifications?

Yes, with check with your instructor to get the proper modificaton of the posutre or postures you need to modify. We ask that if you're not able to perform a posture or modiciation, you take a knee or lie in savasaha so as to not interrupt your fellow yogis. or we are unsure, we will approach you in a loving, kind way.
